Lakes ElementaryBefore and After CareBAC Registration The BAC Program (Before & After Care) provides quality care for RPS school-aged children in developmental kindergarten through fifth grade and is available every school day at all of our elementary schools. This program focuses on enhancing physical, intellectual, social, and emotional development, with recognition of individual interests and talents and promotion of the school as a safe and stimulating place. Table games, crafts, gym time, outdoor play and an afternoon snack are planned each day. Note for parents of incoming Developmental Kindergarten (DK) students: When entering your child’s information, you will not see an option for DK under grade. Please select “Kindergarten” and choose “Fall 2027” from the dropdown menu next to the grade field. DK students attending Parkside should register for BAC at Valley View Elementary. DK students attending Edgerton Trails or Crestwood may register at either their home school or the school where they attend DK. Days & Hours The BAC program begins on the first day of the school year and ends on the last day of school. Morning BAC is available from 7:00 AM - 8:25 AM. Afternoon BAC is available from 3:30 PM - 6:00 PM. Care is available on early release days from 1:30 PM - 6:00 PM. Care is NOT available on district snow days. Tuition Information Rockford Before and After Care is a prepaid program. The BAC program is tuition based; it is not funded by Rockford Public Schools. We do not offer sibling discounts. Tuition is charged based on enrollment, not attendance, i.e., illness, vacation. If BAC is open, you will be charged if your child was scheduled to attend. Per-Student Fees Non-Refundable Enrollment Fee: $40 per student (will be charged upon contract approval) There is no sibling discount Morning Session: $10 per day per child Afternoon Session: $15 per day per child Early Release: $20 per day per child Full Day BAC: $45 per day per child AM Delay of School Care: $13 per child A saved payment method will be required at registration. We will discuss the history of the game, the game pieces and how to use them as well as strategies for play. Instruction includes the basic rules of play and using the MahJongg card (card provided) as defined by the National MahJongg League. We will also discuss winning play. This is a hands-on and enjoyable learning experience. Instructor Background: As an avid game player, Kathleen McFarlane enjoys teaching and playing MahJongg. She has been playing for six years and has truly enjoyed it. Kathleen loves teaching people to play this old but interesting game. There is a lot to learn to begin to play which is part of the fascination. It's an accomplishment for her to watch you learn to enjoy the game as well.Fall 2026 -
Learn to Sew Together IIYouth Enrichment RecreationAges 8 & up with an adult. This class will build on the skills learned in the Learn to Sew Together I beginning class. Knowledge of a sewing machine and some prior sewing experience is required. Students will learn new sewing skills while making a project at each class. Just in time for the holidays and a great way to spend time together. Participants will need to bring their own sewing machine and purchase supplies prior to each class. A supply list will be emailed to you prior to each class. Only one registration per child/adult pair - Please register just the child attending. Doors open at 11:45 a.m. (Pre-registration is required) F26-5261A- THE RIDGE: Friday, September 18 $10Presented by Jayson Otto. After the Great Panic of 1837, eastern settlers looked west for land. A year earlier, the Treaty of Washington was negotiated, ceding over a third of Michigan’s land mass from the Odawa and Ojibway people. This talk will focus on an important swath of land northwest of Grand Rapids, now known as the Fruit Ridge, or simply “The Ridge,” which was opened for American colonization following these historical turning points. With the help of some newly discovered letters by early settler Adelia Hills, Jayson will add to the fascinating story of this unique ecological and cultural place in Michigan, a space which went from a contested space of poor squatters, dispossessed indigenous farmers, and eastern Yankees to what is now one of the most productive apple regions in the country. F26-5261B- BOMBS AWAY: Friday, October 16 $10Presented by Ric Mixter. The Great Lakes have been home to military installations since 1755, and aircraft have flown from this region nearly since the first engined aircraft took to the sky. Selfridge Air National Guard (ANG) is named for the first casualty in powered flight, a young lieutenant named Thomas Selfridge who crashed while flying with Orville Wright. Selfridge was also home to the Tuskegee Airmen, an elite group of African American pilots who flew in World War II. Bombs Away chronicles the most famous missions of four air bases: Sawyer, Wurtsmith, Selfridge, and Kincheloe, which was home to nuclear-armed B-52s from 1961 to 1977. This base was also among the first in a missile defense network called BOMARC, which once shielded North America from Soviet threats. Ric’s lecture features the Tuskegee Airmen, bomber activity in Vietnam, and long-range missions that quickly ended the war in Iraq. Also highlighted is bomber production in Michigan, where “Rosie the Riveter” assembled B-24 Liberators used in World War II. F26-5261C- LAKE MICHIGAN CIRCLE TOUR: Friday, November 20 $10 Presented by Dianna Stampfler. Vacationers have been looping the lake for generations, but the official “Lake Michigan Circle Tour” route wasn’t established until the 1980s when the Michigan Department of Transportation teamed up with West Michigan Tourist Association (WMTA) to create the route and its official guidebook. Along the way, find more than 100 lighthouses, countless islands, unique attractions, parks and natural areas, miles of glorious beaches, quaint harbor towns, an internationally-recognized urban center, and one “modern marvel,” the Mackinac Bridge. Instructor: Cristina Dunahoo is licensed by the State of Michigan as a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC), license #6401224060. She holds a Master of Science in Marriage, Couple, and Family Counseling from Walden University, MN, which she graduated in November 2021, with a 4.00 GPA. She is trained in Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) and has recently received her Certified Advanced Alcohol and Drug Certification (CAADC). Prior to his 41 years teaching biology, botany, zoology, and ornithology at Cornerstone, Gator was a Park Ranger Naturalist for Gallatin National Forest West Yellowstone, Nature Director at Lake Ann Camp and Camp Brookwoods, adjunct professor at Kuyper College and Spring Arbor College, and taught in the Master Naturalist Program with the Kent/Michigan State University Extension. Montessori AM & PMRockford Preschool Half DayChild Development Lab This program is located at Rockford High School and teaches preschoolers to become successful learners through cooperative experiences, problem solving and play, while training high school students enrolled in child development and life skills classes to become potential educators. Preschool children have many opportunities to learn independence, make decisions, develop creativity, and practice social and kindergarten readiness skills. The activities are planned with care using the High Scope curriculum. This quality approach to early childhood education has been developed through research and practice over 50 years in Ypsilanti, MI. Children must be 3 or 4 by September 1 of the current school year and completely independent in the bathroom. 3-year-old class runs Tuesday/Thursday 9-11:30 AM or 12:30-3 PM 4-year-old class runs Monday/Wednesday/Friday 9-11:30 AM or 12:30-3 PM Community Education Preschool This well-established program is held at the Rockford Public Schools Administration Building. This program helps children develop the ability to work and play together in an enjoyable group setting that utilizes a developmentally appropriate kindergarten readiness curriculum. Students are exposed to and practice social and cognitive skills with a focus on environmental topics. Classes are offered for children three and four years old. Children must be completely independent in the bathroom. All our staff are trained in early childhood, CPR and first aid. PSAT/SAT Prep WorkshopYouth Enrichment RecreationThis workshop is for 8th - 12th grade students. One-time three-hour workshop available for students to learn about the content and structure of the PSAT/SAT test. They will learn and implement test strategies to increase accuracy and improve time management for both the math and reading sections. Students will leave the workshop with a free study plan to help them continue to prepare. Students will need to bring paper, a writing utensil, a computer, and their login information for www.collegeboard.org and www.khanacademy.org. If you do not have an account, please create one before the day of the workshop.Instructor Background: Allison Sanders is currently a certified teacher in the math department at Rockford High School. She has a bachelor's degree in Math Education plus a master's in Teaching and Curriculum with a Literacy Specialization—perfect combo for test prep.
