The Intentional Journal: Connecting with Yourself (Part 1)Adult Enrichment and RecreationWe spend so much of our lives listening: to the news, social media, family, coworkers, and to everyone else's opinions. Journaling is one of the few places where we slow down long enough to hear our own voice again. Have you ever caught yourself thinking, My mind won't stop racing. I don't even know who I am anymore. I can't say this out loud to anyone. I know I should slow down and reflect, but I don't know where to start. If any of those thoughts sound familiar, this class is for you. Through guided writing and reflection, and examples, you’ll see how, one page at a time, to reconnect with yourself, organize your thoughts, and possibly solve some of the world’s problems! LOL. Journaling is a powerful practice that can reduce stress, bring clarity to your goals, strengthen gratitude, and help you process life's challenges. You don't have to be a writer to benefit! A $25 workbook is included.Instructor: Jill Carlen is a Rockford native, retired English teacher, and lifelong journal writer. People often tell me they aren't writers, and I always smile. You should see my journal; I'm not a writer either. It's messy and full of misspellings. Because I only write in pen, you'll see every mistake I make: it's just like the inside of my head. My journal is the place where I dump every thought and idea; I process events and emotions there too. I invite you to take a look inside my head, in hopes that you'll spend some time inside yours.Fall 2026 -

The Power of PoetryAdult Enrichment and RecreationHello fellow Poe & Poets and welcome to the Power of Poetry class! Poetry changed my life and you have the chance for it to do the same for you. In the Power of Poetry class, you will learn the basics of public speaking, insight into my relationship with poetry, what I've been through, and what the power of poetry is for you. The class will be broken into times of sharing, writing, playing, exploring, and empowering each other. As part of our time together, you will be tasked with writing an original poem(s) which we will workshop in class and perform on the last day in front of family and friends. I look forward to our time together and hearing all that you have to share. So, until next time, keep your pen sharp with an open heart. - MANLEE POETRYInstructor: Jesse VanderKodde was sitting in the back of his high school classroom when the teacher said, "We're going to do a poetry unit." Jesse heard a voice pop up in his head so clearly that said, "Poetry is for sissies." And that's true, because when poetry first surprised him, he was afraid of so much in his life and scared to address it. Poetry gave Jesse a safe space to wrestle with, enjoy, explore, discover, question, and articulate - any experience he had gone through. Speaking of experiences, here are some of his professional experiences: 4 BA's in Elementary Education, Bible Theology, Teaching English as a Foreign Language, and SantaClausology along with a minor in Creative Writing. Jesse has worked as an on-camera and stage writer, director, and actor. He has performed original poetic pieces in Korea, China, Michigan, and worldwide with his YouTube channel MANLEE POETRY. Jesse wants to take all his gifts and knowledge and share them with you.Fall 2026 -
